Where were you when the world stopped turning on that September day?

Today in Political Science, what little we had of the class, our teacher had the TV on a news channel that was showing footage of the terriost attacks on the US on this day six years ago. It was mostly of the World Trade Center and when the towers fell, but it was still enough to get the attention of the whole class. We weren't required to watch it, no one said we had to, but every single person in that room turned around to see the images that we've been seeing for the past six years.

After the TV was turned off, Cody and I started talking about where we were when it actually happened. Apparently, at his middle school they chose not to alarm the students, and he wasn't told about it until the end of the day. At my school, all the teachers had the TVs on. I can remember that a few of them were crying, and then there were kids running through the halls yelling, "They took out the Pentagon!"

As a sixth grader, I had no idea what that meant. I didn't really know what it meant that these planes were being hijacked and crashed. I just knew that it was bad. Later on, we would all be sat down in our classes and told exactly what was happening, and what it meant. Parents were pulling their children out of school, which I thought was stupid for where we live, but whatever, and it was just a chaotic day.

Now, we hardly even recognize it. Political Science was the only class that I had that the attacks were brought up in. There was no moment of silence, and no one even blinked at the date. To me, this is sad and pathetic and there's no excuse for it. I know that this happened six years ago, but how can you just move on? I don't get how you really can if you live in the United States and see how the attacks of that day effect your everyday lives. I don't even know how to put into words my frustration over all of this, and I don't think I'll try because you'd get nothing but paragraph after paragraph of angry ranting.

To make the day even better, office duty first period really sucked. There was some smoking on a bus this morning, and while the principals were dealing with that, I was the one answering the phone when the angry mothers were calling in. How wonderful to start off my day by getting yelled at for something that I was in no way involved in. Eventually, I just left the office and let the phone ring.

Second period we had our senior class meeting where the rules were read to us, and we were once again reminded that we were to respect and follow them. I found the whole thing to be a waste of time. The rules are simple. Don't do drugs on school property. Wear appropriate clothing. No cell phones in class. Don't bring weapons to school. Blah blah blah. We've heard it all before. The only thing that was even somewhat important was hearing some information about the ACT testing and about some deadlines that we have to meet.

Third period we had a "rainy day" packet to do because, yes, it was raining. Then lunch, then off to watch the ninth graders suffer through their science class. Today they weren't as funny, but I still managed to find some amusement in it.

and that was my September 11.

Yeah, nobody mentioned it today at all. Seems like they should institute a day, like they have for Pearl Harbor Day. Not a holiday, just a day of remembrance. "December 7th, 1941, a day that will live in infamy"
